For 11-year-old Dylan Githu, a cheerful Grade 6 student from Kenya, school life had become increasingly difficult. While his friends could run, play, and move around freely, Dylan struggled to walk independently due to foot drop caused by Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
Understanding GBS and Foot Drop
GBS is a rare neurological condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves. It often follows an infection and can lead to muscle weakness, paralysis, and difficulties in movement. One of its common after-effects is foot drop, where the patient cannot lift the front part of the foot properly, leading to dragging while walking.
For Dylan, this meant constant challenges, not only in mobility but also in confidence. Despite undergoing multiple physiotherapy sessions in Kenya, his condition showed little improvement. Walking to school or even moving around the house without support became increasingly difficult. His parents realized that if Dylan was to regain his independence, he needed specialized surgical treatment that was not available locally.
Searching for GBS Treatment Abroad
Determined to find the best care for their son, Dylan’s parents began exploring options outside Kenya. Through social media, they discovered HOSPIDIO, a medical travel partner that had successfully guided many families through similar journeys.
What stood out to the family was the quick communication, transparent planning, and flexibility HOSPIDIO offered. Importantly, the treatment dates were aligned with Dylan’s school vacation, ensuring he wouldn’t miss more classes than necessary. They were also reassured by the affordable treatment costs and arrangements for a comfortable family apartment in India, where Dylan, his parents, and his sister could stay together during his treatment.
The family was also assured about the cost of treatment and accommodation. With HOSPIDIO’s guidance, they packed their bags and traveled together, Dylan, his parents, and his sister, to India for treatment at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram.
A Warm Welcome in India
The journey started smoothly. At the airport, a HOSPIDIO team member greeted the family, helped them settle into a 2BHK apartment, and even accompanied them to shop for groceries so Dylan could enjoy home-cooked meals.
Everything was taken care of, so the family could focus only on Dylan’s recovery.
Surgery with Dr. Ramkinkar Jha
At Artemis Hospitals, Dylan met Dr. Ramkinkar Jha, an experienced orthopedic surgeon. After examining him, the doctor recommended a tendon transfer surgery to correct his foot drop.Originally, both feet were to be operated in a single sitting. But since long anesthesia wasn’t safe for an 11-year-old, Dr. Jha wisely chose to operate one foot first, then the other a week later.
The plan worked perfectly. Dylan had both surgeries done, got his stitches removed on the last day in India, and returned home with his feet properly bandaged and custom shoes made to support his new walking style.
The results were nothing short of amazing. Before the surgery, Dylan couldn’t walk without dragging his feet. After the surgery, he was not allowed to walk until he heals properly. Now almost a month into the surgery for his second feet, he can walk with support. His parents are filled with hope, knowing that physiotherapy and rehabilitation would continue improving his steps.
For Dylan, the journey wasn’t just about hospitals. He loved trying Indian food, exploring new places with his family, and enjoying the little adventures that came with this big trip. But the best part? He could finally see a future where he would walk freely again.
A Happy Family’s Words
The hospital experience left the family deeply satisfied. They appreciated the excellent communication, pre-op and post-op care, and the reassurance provided by both the Artemis medical team and HOSPIDIO.
Dylan’s parents were overjoyed and grateful. In their own words:
“It’s been wow! From medical works, to accommodation, to food — it’s been just wonderful.”

HOSPIDIO’s role extended far beyond coordinating treatment. They ensured custom shoes were designed for Dylan to support his new walking pattern. Every detai, from transport to medical supplies, was taken care of. On the final day in India, Dylan had his stitches removed and traveled home with proper dressings and instructions, ensuring a safe journey back.
Dylan’s story shows that no challenge is too big when hope and support come together. With the right doctors, proper treatment, and guidance from HOSPIDIO, he is on his way to walking confidently again — ready to chase dreams, enjoy school, and live life like any other child his age.
For parents considering medical travel for their children, Dylan’s story is a testament to what’s possible with the right support. Seeking care abroad can feel overwhelming, but with dedicated partners like HOSPIDIO, families can focus on their child’s recovery while every detail is handled seamlessly.
