Procedure Performed

At Max Hospital, a wide range of advanced medical procedures are performed, ensuring comprehensive care across multiple specialties. Some of the key procedures include:

Laparoscopic urologic surgery

Laparoscopic urologic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure designed to address urological issues with minimal discomfort to the patient. This technique involves the use of a laparoscope, which is equipped with an inbuilt camera and several long, thin surgical instruments. These tools are inserted into the body through small incisions, allowing the surgeon to perform the necessary corrections. Patients benefit from improved post-operative pain management, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, and enhanced overall outcomes.

In recent years, robotic technology has been integrated into laparoscopic urologic surgery, further advancing the field. Robotic surgery offers superior visualization and enhanced dexterity, making it particularly effective for procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Laparoscopic urologic surgery is now used to treat a wide range of benign and malignant urological conditions. Common procedures performed laparoscopically include pyeloplasty, nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, radical prostatectomy, and radical cystectomy. This approach has significantly improved the precision and effectiveness of urological surgeries.

Bone marrow transplant

Bone marrow is essential for blood cell formation, with all blood cells originating from a subset of marrow cells known as hematopoietic stem cells. These stem cells can renew themselves and develop into various types of blood cells. Today, hematopoietic stem cells can also be obtained from peripheral blood after treatment with growth factors or from umbilical cord blood. This has led to the broader term "Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation" or "Bone Marrow Transplantation."

In this procedure, healthy stem cells are injected into a recipient following a short course of chemotherapy, known as conditioning. This treatment is used for conditions such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, severe blood diseases like aplastic anemia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, and certain immune deficiency diseases. Stem cells are typically collected from a peripheral vein, similar to donating blood or platelets. These transplanted stem cells help produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the recipient, aiding in their recovery.

Coronary angioplasty

Coronary angioplasty is a medical procedure used to treat narrowed or blocked coronary arteries caused by plaque buildup. Plaque, a fatty substance, can restrict blood flow to the heart muscle, leading to chest pain (angina) or heart attacks (myocardial infarction). The goal of coronary angioplasty is to improve blood flow to the heart and relieve these symptoms.

During the procedure, the patient receives anesthesia. A catheter, a thin and flexible tube, is inserted through a small incision in the groin or arm and guided to the blockage site in the coronary artery using X-ray imaging or fluoroscopy. Once the catheter is correctly positioned, a small balloon attached to its end is inflated to widen the narrowed or blocked artery, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle.

In many cases, a stent—a metal mesh device—is placed in the artery to keep it open and prevent future blockages. The stent is delivered to the blockage site using the balloon catheter and expanded. After the stent is in place, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed. The incision is then closed with surgical glue or sutures, and a bandage is applied to the site.
