Dr. Mohamed Rela

Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rela is a globally renowned liver transplant surgeon with over 30 years of experience in liver transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery. He completed his medical education at Stanley Medical College, Chennai, and pursued further specialization in the United Kingdom, obtaining an MS from Edinburgh and becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1988. In 1991, he joined King's College Hospital, London, as a Professor of Liver Surgery.

Dr. Rela has performed over 4,000 liver transplant surgeries, including a groundbreaking procedure in December 1997, where he led a team that successfully performed a liver transplant on a five-day-old girl. This achievement earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000.

In 2009, Dr. Rela established the Institute of Liver Disease and Transplantation at Global Gleneagles Health City, which became India's largest liver transplant program under his leadership. In 2018, he founded the Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre in Chennai, aiming to provide comprehensive healthcare services with a focus on complex diseases and primary healthcare.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Rela has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to numerous book chapters, including the latest edition of Gray’s Anatomy. He is a member of several prestigious organizations, such as the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) and the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT), reflecting his commitment to advancing medical science globally.
